German researchers have obtained Genetically modify spiders that weave fluorescent silk threads in red brightdemonstrating that the silk of these animals can be genetically modified within the living organism.
The experiences were carried out by the biomaterial research group of the University of Bayreuth (Germany), by the system of Genetic edition CRISPR-CAS9, A tool that allows scientists to cut the genome from a cell in specific places and delete or insert sequences.
Genetically modified spiders
For this work, they used a kind of common domestic spider (Parastida Tepidariorum). Scientists have developed a new CRISPR solution that contains Genetic sequence of a red fluorescent silk protein and injected him into non -fertilized spider eggs.
The micro-injection process was not an easy task. He involved anesthetic spiders with CO2 to prevent them from moving during the procedure. After recovery, the females got confused with males of the same species.
Hilarious fluorescent silk offspringProof that genetic edition had been established without modifying the assembly of silk.
The common domestic spider produced fluorescent red silk after being genetically published.
This successful experience could open the door to better silk features, expanding its potential in the Biotechnology materials and scienceBecause spider silk is a fascinating natural fiber, known for its extreme resistance to tear, elasticity, lightness and biodegradability.
It should be noted that these are unlikely Spiders generate superheroes (for now). They are not radioactive, and although their DNA has been modified, so far, they are still common domestic spiders, mainly …
The discovery was published in the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie.
