Several years ago, while a team of archaeologists was excavating a megalithic tomb in the Tholos de Montelirio (Spain), they discovered an extraordinary dagger formed from rock crystal.
For experts, this artifact is the most technically sophisticated to have been discovered in the prehistoric Iberian Peninsula and would have required enormous skill to carve it. Dating back 5,000 years, the crystal dagger is nearly 8.5 inches long and was found with 10 arrowheads, four blades and a primitive weapon workshop, all made of rock crystal.
The weapon could once have belonged to an elite individual and had symbolic meaning.
Many artifacts made of exotic materials such as ivory, gold or amber, as well as ceramics, lithics, bone and textiles, have also been found at the site.
