Ms. Marvel, released on June 8, is an American television miniseries based on the character Kamala Khan (better known as Ms. Marvel). This sequel was created by Bisha K. Ali for the Disney+ streaming service and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This series consisted of 6 chapters as part of Phase Four of the UCM and will anticipate the movie The Marvels, in which Vellani will play Khan. However, despite the fact that the episodes seemed to delve into the life of the heroine, from her admiration for the Avengers in adolescence to her encounter with Captain Marvel, and sought to give depth to her character, it seems that a unique moment for the MCU will be overshadowed with an apparent costume change in Ms. Marvel.
As we mentioned, the ending of Ms. Marvel was intended to open the doors for the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, however, leaks revealed a series of photos from The Marvels set in which Kamala Khan received an update on her costume design. . It is certainly not surprising that the producers have made a decision like this, since in the installments of the MCU it is very common for the heroes to change their suit at each premiere. Unfortunately, The new suit of The Marvels did not favor one of the most important and moving scenes of the miniseries.
On the other hand, continuing the events of the MCU in 2019’s Captain Marvel, The Marvels brings together Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan to face a new intergalactic threat. However, because Kamala was the last character to be introduced to the franchise, the Disney+ series was relatively short. So in an attempt to balance her superhero skills and the struggles of everyday life, Kamala was highly humanized by her creators, a pretty positive development considering she gave her character a context. And, once this kind of introduction to The Marvels was over, the closing was planned to focus on a touching scene between Kamala and her parents.
Kamala Khan’s outfit shouldn’t be changed
During the events of the Ms. Marvel series, we were able to see that Kamala wore a homemade costume that bears a strong resemblance to Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel costume. In this way, in the outcome of the Disney + miniseries, Kamala’s mother finally accepts the fate of the heroine and gives her a completely new outfit that would better represent her origins, her culture and her own personality. Despite the fact that this outfit was the one used in the promos for the series, it is not until this moving moment that Kamala receives it, thus closing the events of Ms. Marvel with many feelings on the surface for her fans. . In essence, Kamala’s new costume signifies the conclusion of her arc within the events of the MCU. Unfortunately, when Kamala shows up in the next installment of the franchise, she’s going to get a costume change, which would throw away this great Ms. Marvel moment.
Although the custom among the heroes of the franchise has always been the change of costumes, this time there is no reason for Ms. Mavel to have a change in The Marvels. That is to say, during most of her own arc she used a homemade suit that was not really the most suitable for her, until her mother gave her one of hers that would represent her and it was at the final moment of the miniseries. So scrapping such an emotional idea and replacing it with another design without a strong argument isn’t much of a plan on the part of the MCU, not to mention that this new costume change of Ms. Marvels for The Marvels could harm the image or character development. The new suit that her mother gave him means that the tense relationship he had with her is finally behind him and, in this way, the emotional connection that this suit implies for Kamala and her mother would be dissipating; plus the public had also associated the outfit with a big moment for the heroine.
In this sense, the problem is not the new design itself, since the new costumes of Phase 4 of the MCU are quite good, but wasting such a touching idea and leaving it behind for no reason is a mistake. Although the current costume has barely been used and sticks to the aesthetic of the comics, it has lost all the emotional weight that has been given to few costumes of the heroes in the MCU.
