It seems that putting Boruto as the protagonist… could have been bait.
Before continuing, it should be noted that this article will contain some major spoilers for the latest chapters of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, available at MangaPlus by Shueisha. Now, there is something concrete to say on the subject: It is no surprise that Boruto is not a beloved protagonist among the public. Every so often, you will see a post on Reddit mentioning how terrible his character is to them, and it seems that this has reached the ears of the editorial team.
All this is thanks to the return of the Otsutsukis who are going to make it impossible any rumors about the death of Naruto and Sasuke in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Being the only two people to have defeated multiple Otsutsuki, their involvement in taking down a new Otsutsuki threat would seem necessary, even if he takes on Kawaki’s body or Boruto’s.

This involvement may take the form of a direct confrontation between the two older ninjas and Otsutsuki, or a more roundabout approach through younger ninjas like Sarada and Mitsuki. The Otsutsuki Clan is literally the root of all evil in the Naruto universe.. Arriving on Earth from another dimension thousands of years ago to harvest a chakra fruit from a God Tree, Kaguya Otsutsuki betrayed his family and ate the fruit to become a God to mankind. Taking a human as her husband, she gave birth to two sons to whom she passed some of her chakra energy. It is through her descendants that the chakra was passed on to the rest of humanity. One of her children would go on to create ninjutsu.

Only four people have been able to stop Kaguya: her two sons, Naruto and Sasuke., who are the reincarnations of Kaguya’s grandchildren, Indra and Asura. The only other person to defeat an Otsutsuki was Naruto’s son Boruto, who defeated Momoshiki Otsutsuki, who was sent by the family leaders to control Kaguya after she cut off communication.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations could refocus on Naruto and Sasuke
When Isshiki Otsutsuki, Kaguya’s original partner, was finally defeated by another Naruto-Sasuke collaboration, the feeling of many fans was that by eliminating the Otsutsuki threat, Naruto creator Masahi Kishimoto finally decided to turn his attention to developing Naruto. Boruto’s “next generation” of shinobi. As if they read the thoughts of the fans, Naruto and Sasuke became less important to the story.a, as it highlighted the conflict between Kara reconstituted under Code, Eida, and Daemon, and the deepening bond between Boruto and Kawaki. Boruto then strongly suggested that the kama inscribed on Kawaki and Code was still working despite the “disappearance” of Isshiki and Momoshiki. The obvious effect of this plot point is that it seems that Kishimoto is not yet ready to make the story entirely about Boruto or his companions. Meaning, whatever story they have to tell, it will be told through the prism of an ongoing narrative arc focused squarely on Naruto.
If there is one plot point that was made clear in the most recent chapter of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, it is that the Clan Otsutsuki is ready to return, either directly or through their ships Boruto, Kawaki and Code. Otsutsuki’s return establishes the likely resurgence of Naruto and Sasuke as the central heroes of the story. Considering that some feel that Boruto is a worse protagonist than Naruto, this could come off as divisive or rather positive, and with the recent revelations about its protagonists’ pasts, this seems like a good time to try new things.
