While the formal presentation of PS VR2 could take place this week, according to the latest rumors, there has also been speculation about its possible launch window. Analysts place Sony’s virtual reality glasses in the first quarter of 2023 with nearly one and a half million units ready to distribute.

“My latest supply chain check suggests that the assembler and various component suppliers of PS VR2 will begin mass production on second half of 2022 with approximately 1.5 million units,” comments TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo through his Titter account. “Sony may launch it in the first quarter of 2023, depending on the development schedule of the titles of PS VR2 games.

“Sony’s position and resources in the games industry can accelerate AAA VR game development (for example, Horizon: Call of the Mountain), benefiting the growth of VR”. In its day, PlayStation assured that PS VR2 would go on the market along with about 20 launch gamesalthough so far only Horizon Call of the Mountain has been announced as a first party game.

As for the different component suppliers, “in the AR/VR/MR era, I think orders for aspherical lenses, Fresnel and Pancake lenses High-ASP Genius vendors, both from Apple and other vendors, will be a strong new growth driver,” says Kuo. “Other critical PS VR2 vendors worth mentioning include Goertek (assembly), SDC (OLED panel), MediaTek (processor)etc.”
