There are many theories about what these variants will entail, but to what extent will Wanda give in to his dark intentions?
Wanda Miximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, is one of the most well-known villains in the entire Marvel Universe. She first appeared in X-Men #4 and since her debut as a supervillain, she has impressed audiences with her reality-bending abilities and made more than one fearful of her with her powerful spells. . And, fortunately for us, she will return in 2022 with one of the most anticipated films by Marvel fans: “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”.
But the surprises surrounding this feature film have not ended. Recently the director, Sam Raimi, has confirmed that Wanda Maximoff will have multiple facets that Elizabeth Olsen will play.. In a way, this was something we could see coming, since Raimi’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, after his participation in the Spider-Man trilogy and its respective success, represents a new opportunity for present a compelling story. Therefore, it was predictable that Raimi had prepared an impeccable construction for the characters.
On the other hand, this revelation left an important issue on the table: the antagonists. This close relationship between the Scarlet Witch variants and the appearance of Mordo and Gargantos could imply that something deeper is being woven into the plot. Added to this, previously it had already been shown that there would also be some variants for Doctor Strange (including an Evil Strange that, according to some fans’ speculation, could be the main antagonist of the film), so this expansion of the multiverse could bring many more surprises, considering that there will be different villains.
The return of Wanda Maximoff
After the success of Elizabeth Olsen in the Disney + series WandaVision, during 2021, the expectations about the Scarlet Witch have only increased. We must not forget that the character has evolved after going through the loss of Vision and her brother. But one fact is that Wanda’s true power has given rise to multiple suspicions that it is so immense that she could open a gap between dimensions and generate unprecedented chaos if she lost control over it. Although According to the Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailers, there could be an unexpected twist for the Scarlet Witch.since the use of the Darkhold could be a weapon of destruction.
Here, it is worth mentioning that the use of the spellbook has made Wanda an easy target for corruption. But, Contrary to the theory that Evil Strange would be the true antagonist, other fans believe that it would actually be Chthon, the Elder God, author of the Darkhold.since his appearances in the promos could be an indication that he will not only be involved in the destruction of the world, but that he will be the one to take control over Wanda.
As we mentioned previously, during an interview, Sam Raimi stated that a few variants of the supervillain would appear in the film. Something that has left fans thinking, especially if she will be the same Wanda that has been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how this version would face Dr. Strange. But when these possibilities were raised to the director, he first commented that Olsen would be in charge of bringing each of the variants to life; but, in addition, that it was quite a difficult challenge to interpret them, both for her and for Benedict Cumberbatch. Of course, despite the complexity involved in the performances, the direction was a very fun process. In Raimi’s words:
“Yes. The movie is a trip to the multiverse, so you see different iterations of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and even Lizzie Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff character. So the actors have to play that. It’s a big challenge for them and great fun directing them playing these altered versions of themselves.”
Although it is true that Raimi’s participation has allowed other possibilities for Wanda’s character, especially from the perspective that she will not give in to the temptations of the Darkhold, there is another reason behind why there were no suspicions of these variants and they have to do totally with WandaVision. Thanks to the nuances that this series gave to the Scarlet Witch, fans have been able to get a little closer to the villain and thus better understand her motivations.
After some adjustments derived from COVID-19, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will finally be released on May 6.
