Scientists make two people communicate through dreams – Mystery Science

Have you ever thought about talking to someone while you dream? Well, it seems that some Californian scientists have managed to bring this phenomenon closer to reality after achieving the first two-way communication between individuals through the lucid dreams.

REM spacea California-based startup that designs technologies to improve sleep and health. lucid dreamsclaims to have succeeded in exchanging messages between two participants in his experiment, who were sleeping.

In addition, REM space claims to have reached this milestone on September 24 and repeat it again in October.

Communication between two people in a lucid dream state is possible thanks to the company REMspace.

Lucid dreaming is a state in which you are asleep but are also aware that you are dreaming.

Michael RadugaCEO of REMspace explained:

“For example, when a participant was having a lucid dream, our server would send them a random word, so no one knew what word it was, and in a lucid dream, they would respond. Our server detected his answer and confirmed it was correct, and when the next person was in a lucid dream, we sent him his answer and he repeated it too.

How did they get it?

These states, in which the dreamer becomes aware of their dream without waking up, occur during the REM sleep phase, a stage characterized by intense brain activity and vivid dreams.

Raduga says that communication is achieved through a special polysomnography device, which is attached to different areas of the head to monitor brain waves and other parameters of participants during sleep. These devices were connected to a central server, the REMspace “heart of the system,” which monitored their sleep patterns in real time.

When one of the participants reached the lucid dream state, the system sent a word in a message invented language called Remmyodeveloped specifically for dream communication. There, a soft whisper deep in sleep was transmitted to the first participant via headphones.

“When you speak in this language in your dreams, we can hear you and connect two dreamers together,” Raduga said.

THE the first word transmitted was “Jilak”was processed by the first participant and repeated while dreaming; His voice was picked up by the sensors and stored on the server. Eight minutes later, the second dreamer also reached the REM state and received the same word, managing to repeat it in his own dream. When they woke up, they both confirmed that the transmission was successful.

New ways to understand lucid dreams

The experiment carried out by REMspace showed that it is possible to take advantage of this state to transmit complex messages between people who are dreaming.

The company anticipates that the technology and techniques will help people suffering from mental health or to reduce nightmares and phobias. He says they could even be used for job training.

“In a few years, such technologies will be as common as cell phones. People will not be able to imagine their lives without them, because they will make their lives much more dynamic, very different,” he said. “This will improve the quality of life so much that people will no longer be able to imagine their lives without such technologies. We just need to improve them, and it’s just a matter of time. »

Although this research is still in its preliminary phase, its potential is immense.

Now people from different countries are participating in the study. While Raduga has submitted his work to peer review and is seeking participants who have or could have lucid dreaming experience to participate in additional studies.

However, not everyone welcomes this progress. The possibility of transforming sleep into a productive space has sparked debates about its impact on true rest, mental disconnection and the balance between productivity and rest.
