In the city of Night City every day you live on the edge. There is always a new great opportunity to succeed just around the corner or a catastrophe of absurd proportions about to explode right under your nose. Possibly, the two things are happening at the same time and it is not ruled out that there is a relationship between the two. We experienced it in the first person through Cyberpunk 2077 and very soon we will witness it in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
After making the leap from the classic role to the RPG, the universe Cyberpunk 2077 imagined by Mike Pondsmith expands beyond video games and paper with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime series produced by a Netflix on a roll in bringing video games to Made in Japan animation and developed through a close collaboration between CD Projekt RED Y Studio Trigger. Great ingredients for an action and science fiction anime.
A video game adaptation? Not exactly: the story of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes place in the same futuristic dystopia that we knew on PCs and Consoles, and the animation studio behind kill la kill either Little Witch Academia He has thrown himself into offering recognizable environments for players, but this is not the story of V, but of two young people willing to turn the city upside down to be in control of their own destiny. Heroes or villains? Rather, two sons of Night City.
In Extra Life We have gathered in one place everything that has been said and rumored about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. From its announcement to the involvement of the creators of the video game, going through what has been said so far about its plot. Our starting point, on the other hand, is the question you may be asking yourself right now: When and where can I see the first episode?
Release date and number of episodes
All 10 episodes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will premiere on September 22, 2022 only on Netflix and worldwide. By way of illustration, that same month the new season of Kobra Kai (on the 9th) and the adaptation of The school of good and evil (September 30), being the third strong premiere of the platform. On the other hand, and just a little earlier, Amazon Prime Video will launch its own foray into the universe of The Lord of the rings.
Yes ok, the first season consists of 10 episodeswe do not know if there are plans for new seasons or spin-offs of Cyberpunk 2077. Nor has it been established whether it will be a limited series or will be left open, the latter depending on the reception of the first batch of chapters. In any case, it is quite likely that between now and the premiere we will know if there are renewal plans.
The duration of each chapter or the first season has not been specified either. The reference we have are the previous works of Studio Trigger, which have been around 25 minutes. On the other hand, being a series produced specifically for Netflix, it is not expected to reach other video platforms. In any case, Netflix has very punctually published some of its successful series, such as Castlevania, on disc after its premiere.
Night City. Year 2077. Megacorporations and big gangs share control of a city built, demolished and rebuilt to constantly live at the forefront. The rest of the world is just as rotten and corrupt, but the way Night City pulls you in is unique.
Night City is a megalopolis full of contrasts that you become part of it, it makes you an accomplice in its sins and very possibly that complex relationship ends when you end up being fertilizer, buried in its asphalt or abandoned in an alley with the implants conveniently removed by the Scavengers.
An extremely dangerous place for tourists and the curious, but no less risky for those who live on its streets.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the story of lucy and david, two of Night City’s sons. Two young men convinced that they can change the rules of the city and regain control of their lives. A false illusion? Well, Lucy is an exceptional edgerunner, while David has gotten a cybernetic implant that will turn their fates upside down.
David and Lucy, the protagonists of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, they have plans of their own, an unexpected opportunity to make a difference in Night City, and absolutely nothing to lose. Thus, as their lives intersect, they decide to take the plunge and operate outside the law. Not as petty criminals, rough neighborhood thugs, or corrupt corporations; but as mercenaries with a loose cause to fight for: the Edgerunners.
Who’s Who in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
As in the original video game and role-playing game, the obsession with technology and body modification will be one of the main axes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The other two have their own name:
David Martinez He is a young man from the Santo Domingo district, the city’s industrial park. He has been raised on the streets and received an education from the mere Arasaka corporation. However, like his mother, David has a special predisposition to get into trouble.
After facing a tragedy related to his family, and by coincidences of fate, he will end up obtaining a powerful implant that acts from his spine and, based on impulses towards the rest of the body and his own nervous system, give him speed, strength and a unusual perception of the environment. A great power that, in turn, will turn you into a mercenary and a valuable asset within the world of cyberpunks.
the origins of Lucy are all a mystery, but no less is expected of a netrunner: speaking badly and soon we can tell that it is a hacker with a cybernetically augmented interface system. Of course, it is not only dangerous connected to the network: with its nanowire he is able to sever limbs without flinching.
Lucy will serve as a guide to a David who is not sure what to do with his new implant and will team up with him and other Edgerunners to completely turn around the complex network of power under the shadow of Night City. However, her intention is not to take control of the city, since she considers it a prison: His grand plan is to one day escape to the moon.
On the production of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
The announcement of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners occurred on June 25, 2020, months away from what will be the final release of the video game. However, and unlike this one, the release date was established from the outset in 2022. That said, its events have always been considered independent of the history of the video game itself.
the creator of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners it’s CD Projekt RED’s own Rafał Jaki. As reference, The Witcher: Ronin It also bears his signature. As far as the script is concerned, we have Bartosz Sztybor from the Polish studio, who has dedicated himself to bringing the material from the video game to the series, as well as the scripts by Masahiko Otsuka and Yoshiki Usa. For reference, he started working on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in 2018.
However, and despite the enormous involvement of the creators of the video game, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime developed with from Trigger and with its seal: the direction falls on Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare) and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann Y Promare). As far as character design is concerned, we find Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia Y BNA) and Yuto Kaneko (Little Witch Academia).
A very important fact to take into account, especially for music lovers: Akira Yamaoka, whom we know from the Silent Hill video game series, will sign the scores of the original soundtrack, while the opening theme is this fireby Franz Ferdinand.
On May 16, 2022, the first images of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners were shown while the first trailer focused on the fourth episode was one of the highlights of Netflix Geeked Week; also showing the first teaser of the series.

Trailer and images
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners revalidates Netflix’s catalog of video game adaptations in terms of anime, providing a completely original story, being one of the highlights of the platform to say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn in style.
It will be interesting to find out if CD Projekt RED has plans to integrate content from the series into the games in the same way that it will bring The Witcher series, also produced by Netflix, to The Witcher 3. In any case, fans of the video game and the anime have reasons to closely follow this animated project that already has the necessary ingredients to be a hit.
